New: Updated Repurpose Policy

Thanks to everyone who has provided us with feedback on our repurpose process over the past few months! We appreciated hearing all of your thoughts and insights as we worked to revamp our repurpose process, and now we’re ready to unveil our new policy.

Please take some time to review our revamped FAQ pages around repurposes, which includes an updated flowchart to determine whether your design is a repurpose.

Highlights of our repurpose process updates are below:

  • We repurpose artists’ work whenever possible. On average, we launch 4.3 SKUs to Minted per Challenge-winning design, and we’re always looking for ways to repurpose existing Minted designs into new product categories. It’s our goal to help Minted artists get even more sales out of their designs. Please see this new FAQ article for more details.
  • With that in mind, we will no longer accept artist requests to repurpose their designs during the Challenge submission period. We ran the numbers, and found that less than 3% of designs submitted to this form were selected to be repurposed. We believe that having artists suggest repurposes is not an effective use of artist time or the best way for our team to be notified of potential repurposes. As part of our assortment process, our merchandising team spends time looking through the current assortment. They consider potential repurposes for new product kinds and the new assortment. If your work is selected to be repurposed after their review, we will notify you.
  • If the Minted team does the work internally to repurpose your design, you will receive ongoing commissions on sales of that design. We will notify you via email that your design is being repurposed, but will not ask you to make any changes.
  • If we ask you for minor tweaks to the design in order to repurpose it into a new product, we will pay you 25% of the Editors’ Pick payment for that product in addition to ongoing commissions. A minor tweak would be considered something like changing the text to update the design from a bridal shower card to a baby shower card, and wouldn’t require new file creation.
  • If we ask you to create new files for a repurpose opportunity, we will pay you the full Editors’ Pick amount for the repurpose in addition to ongoing commissions. This would include asking you to create additional accessories for your repurposed product or reworking your original design to fit a new product kind (e.g. updating the design from a bridal shower card to a greeting card). Please see our updated FAQ article detailing how much you will be paid for your repurposed design.
  • We ask that you not “self-repurpose” by self-launching versions of your Challenge-winning design to your Artist Store. If you receive customer requests for additional products or variations of your Challenge-winning design, please direct them to Minted’s customer service team for help with their request. See our new FAQ article for language that you can use regarding these customer requests.
  • We also ask that you not submit the same design to multiple open Challenges going forward. We will only be able to consider a submission for a pick in the first Challenge where it is submitted. Please see our updated FAQ article here.

Our priority for artists is that you’re always getting a good return on your investment from the work you do on Minted. We want to encourage you to focus on creating fresh, new designs for Minted Challenges and to self-launch in your store.
